Whole & Human. Forty Meditations for Liberating Body and Spirit.

Awaken your senses to a life beyond survival

In an age of conflict, disparity, and uncertainty, do we really need more church practices built around self-denial, grief, suffering, penance, and fasting? For individuals and communities on the margins, we don’t need weekly or daily reminders about grief—we have enough already. Instead, we need traditions that oppose death and decay with resurrection and triumph. We need to shout “Increase!” for access and collective participation with the deep and wide ethic of radical love.

40 meditations on our relationships with land, body, spirit, and justice with invitations to engage life-giving spiritual practices rooted in the five senses await inside. In this guide for spiritual cultivation, we’re not ignoring the hard times or any losses. But in the midst of heavy things, we can learn to counter daily challenges with restorative possibilities that help us not only survive calamity but thrive toward a new way of life.

It’s time to nourish our bodies instead of denying them. It’s time to cherish simple and beautiful moments, reengage our curiosity, amplify our wonder, pursue justice, and most of all seek ways to love ourselves and one another well. One day at a time.

When We Belong. Reclaiming Christianity on the Margins

Searching for language to describe a faith where you can be your whole self? I’ve got a couple ideas. Step into a journey toward liberation, and belonging

We need belonging to survive and thrive. For Christians who know the pain, isolation, and loss of identity that comes with the ongoing struggle to be seen in churches and institutions full of barriers to belonging, you are not alone. Sometimes it can feel easier to walk away from faith completely. But there is another way. When it feels as though there’s no place left to belong, Jesus invites us into a love that knows no bounds and a community that truly liberates.

Thrive. Ideas to lead the church in post-Christendom.

It's FINALLY Here! 3 years in the making, 9 drafts, 3 re-writes, and a world of learning, my first words book is done. I remember starting this project in the Summer of 2015, as a way to process ideas I was posting on my blog. The vague ideas combined for an initial...

    Time to Decenter Preaching

Do Christians Even Want 40 Minute Opinions Expositions? Updated May 7th, 2018; Updated February 20th, 2010.  Some churchgoers think that the sign of a good church is the quality of the preaching. I've heard, "there's no community to speak of, but the preaching is top...

The Future of Ministry is Bi-Vocational

Bi-vocationalism means having different sources of income rather than one single job. 4 years ago I wrote this blog post on the topic challenging the notion that ministry should be full-time work (proponents are largely unaware what a privilege full-time ministry is)....

Evangelicalism is dead and can’t be saved

Early this year I asked the question, what will replace evangelicalism. I think evangelicalism the movement is dead (or approaching death) because the brand has been catastrophically destroyed. I am connecting labels and brands because outsiders consider them...

    Charlottesville

I can't add to the churning plight emerging in Charlottesville. It's there where the pent up racist rage building in America is tangibly emptying itself unto the streets for the country to watch. I, like many of you, am stunned with these pictures over the past day....
