Whole & Human. Forty Meditations for Liberating Body and Spirit.
Awaken your senses to a life beyond survival
In an age of conflict, disparity, and uncertainty, do we really need more church practices built around self-denial, grief, suffering, penance, and fasting? For individuals and communities on the margins, we don’t need weekly or daily reminders about grief—we have enough already. Instead, we need traditions that oppose death and decay with resurrection and triumph. We need to shout “Increase!” for access and collective participation with the deep and wide ethic of radical love.
40 meditations on our relationships with land, body, spirit, and justice with invitations to engage life-giving spiritual practices rooted in the five senses await inside. In this guide for spiritual cultivation, we’re not ignoring the hard times or any losses. But in the midst of heavy things, we can learn to counter daily challenges with restorative possibilities that help us not only survive calamity but thrive toward a new way of life.
It’s time to nourish our bodies instead of denying them. It’s time to cherish simple and beautiful moments, reengage our curiosity, amplify our wonder, pursue justice, and most of all seek ways to love ourselves and one another well. One day at a time.
When We Belong. Reclaiming Christianity on the Margins
Searching for language to describe a faith where you can be your whole self? I’ve got a couple ideas. Step into a journey toward liberation, and belonging
We need belonging to survive and thrive. For Christians who know the pain, isolation, and loss of identity that comes with the ongoing struggle to be seen in churches and institutions full of barriers to belonging, you are not alone. Sometimes it can feel easier to walk away from faith completely. But there is another way. When it feels as though there’s no place left to belong, Jesus invites us into a love that knows no bounds and a community that truly liberates.

Anti-Asian racism and the terms and conditions of whiteness
I've been thinking.... The rise in anti-Asian racism is a reminder that we must adhere to the terms and conditions too. You can put your head down, work hard, try to assimilate, but the arms of white supremacy will randomly lunge to pull you back into a place. It's...
Choices: On Riots and Insurrections
2021 started off with the proverbial "bang" as the world watched in horror as the riots at the US Capitol Building unfolded. We all had a sense of both dread and awe as we watched the unthinkable happen. For racialized minority, it was also a visceral in your face...
Advent Voices of the Marginalized
2000 years of patriarchy have undoubtedly diminished the powerful words of the two women in our readings. Today we will centre one, a voice that comes to us in the form of a song. œMagnificat anima mea Dominum. It sure sounds better in Latin. Mary's Song, or the...
A Story of Belonging and Why I Gave Up my Vineyard Credentials
This is a story on belonging. In February 2020, Vineyard Canada (VC) made their final decision pertaining to human sexuality. The denomination is now fully NON-affirming, which is to say clergy cannot perform same-sex weddings. It also means LGBTQ persons cannot serve...
The Good Ol Hockey Game Ain’t the Best Game You Can Name
It's probably 1987... The Calgary Flames are two years away from winning the Stanley Cup and I'm learning how to skate deep in the suburbs of South Calgary. I don't know why, but my parents (namely my dad) thought I should learn. What's funny, both my dad and I are...
SBNR – The Spiritual But Not Religious vs. Religion
In this previous post I discussed how often the church labels non-churchgoers as atheists even when they're not. Yes, the majority of people don't attend a monthly religious service, but that doesn't mean atheist. Depending on which stats you decipher, 5-8% of North...
“Thrive” Makes Top Ten Church Planting Books of 2018 List from SEND
My book "Thrive" made the Top 10 Recommended Books on Church Planting from the Send Institute. They build denominational leaders into new ways of thinking on church planting. SEND operates out of Wheaton College, connected to one of the largest evangelical...
Thrive wins best e-book cover (non-fiction)
My book, Thrive, won the top e-book cover design for the month of September over at Thebookdesigner.com. Although it's mostly for bragging rights, winning the non-fiction category demonstrates the quality we were shooting for in production. My friend Riley and I...
Re-imagining Church Leadership in 2020s
I had the pleasure of being invited to hold a session at the Praxis 2018 gathering in Philadelphia, put on by the growing church planting movement V3. The theme of the entire conference centered around a much needed conversation on re-imagining leadership. Little did...
The End. How Losing the Last Millennials from Church Exposes Leadership Problems
This would be a nice song to play while reading this post. In the final chapter of my book, Thrive, I tell a story about an old Presbyterian church that invited Darrel Guder (of Missional Church fame) to speak. As I sat in the crowd listening to his lecture, the...
